Support Mounts for San Juan Wilderness

Businesses Agree Protecting Lands Brings in Tourists, Creates Jobs for Residents

Posted: Thursday, October 6, 2011

I want to thank the many southwestern Colorado businesses and residents that added their voices to the dialogue about my proposed San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act. More than 70 small businesses in San Juan, San Miguel and Ouray counties sent letters of thanks to my office recognizing the direct link between protecting public lands and economic windfall in adjacent regions.

This balanced wilderness designation would allow us to protect our public lands and boost local business opportunities, stabilize jobs and strengthen our communities. Colorado's beautiful natural resources not only spoil us with an enviable quality of life, but they also are huge draws for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists who directly inject dollars into local economies.

My bill is similar to one I helped introduce in the last Congress that was crafted with significant input from the multiple users and stakeholders of the proposed area, so I am not surprised that it has already garnered support from local landowners and community leaders in the Ouray, San Miguel and San Juan county commissions, the city of Ouray and the towns of Ophir, Ridgway, Mountain Village, Telluride and Norwood. I am grateful, though, that they have come out in such strong support of it again. I encourage Coloradans to contact my office to share their input or ask questions about the proposal. Even if you don't leave a comment about the San Juan bill, do check out the maps, which show how this legislation can protect the region and benefit the communities that live there; the maps and comment form are available HERE.
