Udall: Siemens Energy’s Layoffs in Iowa, Kansas, Florida Show Why Congress Needs to Extend the Wind PTC

Posted: Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Mark Udall issued the following statement on Siemens Energy’s announcement today that it will lay off more than 600 workers in Iowa, Kansas and Florida:

“Today’s layoffs — the latest as Congress delays action on the wind Production Tax Credit — are further evidence of the real-life effect Washington’s inaction has on middle-class families across America,” Udall said. “We need to extend the PTC before more companies are forced to respond to the uncertainty over the expiring tax credit. With every job lost and each round of layoffs, we get one step further away from having a healthy, robust American manufacturing sector. I am not going to give up, and I am not going to let partisan obstruction get in the way. Our pursuit of economic growth and an all-of-the-above energy strategy demands nothing less.”

These layoffs follow Udall’s efforts to encourage his colleagues to extend the PTC as soon as possible. Udall has given 18 speeches on the Senate floor. His effort has garnered bipartisan and bicameral support, including accompanying speeches by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I).

Last month, Udall called for and then praised a bipartisan bill, which included the wind Production Tax Credit, and then passed the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. Udall also recently joined with Bennet and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) to reauthorize the wind Production Tax Credit as an amendment to the Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act.

Udall also has written guest columns on the need to extend the wind Production Tax Credit for the Denver Post, the Steamboat Pilot, the Pueblo Chieftain and the Northern Colorado Business Report.
