Udall Dismayed by Vestas Layoffs, Renews Call for Comprehensive Energy Reform

Posted: Thursday, February 21, 2013

Mark Udall, who serves on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, expressed dismay today at the news of Vestas’s decision to cut jobs at its blade factories in Brighton and Windsor. He said Congress’s failure to quickly extend the wind Production Tax Credit last year continues to affect Colorado’s middle-class families and wind energy workers.

"Had Congress acted sooner to reach an agreement on a longer-term solution to support our wind energy industry, I suspect Vestas would not be in this position today. Time and again I reminded my colleagues that our inaction has consequences for hardworking, middle-class families in Colorado and across our great nation," Udall said. "While I remain hopeful that demand for turbines will turn around, our wind energy industry needs more certainty. I look forward to working with my colleagues this year to overhaul our outdated energy policies and provide long-term stability to job creators."

Udall led the bipartisan effort last year to extend the wind Production Tax Credit, including 27 speeches on the flood of the U.S. Senate. Udall’s effort, supported by Colorado business leaders and workers alike, drew the support of a bipartisan and bicameral group of lawmakers, including the father of the PTC, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).
