Udall Statement in Celebration of Veterans Day

Posted: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Mark Udall issued the following statement in honor of Veterans Day.

"Veterans Day is a time to pause and pay our respects to the men and women who serve our country with honor and dedication. We owe our freedom and security to them, and we stand in awe of their commitment to our nation and the principles we hold dear.

"Tomorrow is also a time to recognize the troops who are currently serving overseas as well as those about to deploy. To the soldiers and airmen from Colorado who are currently serving in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan - I say thank you. I encourage Coloradans to take the time to personally thank a veteran for his or her service and to reflect on the freedoms that we all enjoy because of the sacrifices of those who have served.

"I also extend my deepest sympathy and prayers to the family and friends of the victims of the Fort Hood tragedy, as well as to the broader military community. The remarkable actions of the first responders and the community remind us of the selfless service that is demonstrated by our military every day.

"While we set aside November 11 to recognize our veterans, they deserve our thanks every day. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I am proud to fight for resources for our troops and military bases, as well as to ensure that when they return, we keep our commitment, as President Lincoln pledged, ‘to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan.'"
