Udall Welcomes Restoration of Tuition Assistance for Marines, Airmen and Soldiers

Udall Amendment Restored Promise to Help Service Members Earn College Credit, Enhance Professional Capabilities

Posted: Friday, April 12, 2013

Mark Udall, who serves on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, applauded the U.S. Marine Corps, Air Force and Army for reinstating tuition-assistance programs to assist service members in paying for college classes that help them further their military careers or transition into the civilian workforce.  Udall and a bipartisan group of senators led their colleagues in amending the Continuing Resolution, which was signed into law in March, to ensure the military branches would be able to continue providing educational tuition assistance for service members, who Udall said should not bear the brunt of sequestration.

"I applaud military leaders in the Air Force, Army and Marine Corps for reinstating their individual tuition assistance programs," Udall said.  "These programs provide our service members with important educational opportunities that build a stronger, more professional force; increase opportunities for our military men and women; and enhance their skills when they re-enter the civilian workforce.  Tuition assistance is also a key recruiting tool, and I will continue to do everything I can to make sure this program stays open so we keep our promise to our troops, who don't deserve to pay for the sequestration cuts with their futures."

Udall and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) also introduced a plan they will continue to push that would strategically implement the indiscriminate budget cuts associated with sequestration, giving the executive branch more flexibility in implementing the cuts, while also giving Congress the ability to conduct appropriate oversight throughout the process.
