Udall Urges Senate to Level the Playing Field for Main Street Businesses, Colorado Retailers

Mark Udall urged his colleagues to pass the bipartisan Marketplace Fairness Act, a common-sense bill to level the playing field for Main Street businesses and Colorado's brick-and-mortar retailers. The proposal would end the competitive advantage online-only retailers have over local businesses by authorizing states to require that out-of-state retailers collect local sales taxes that are already owed under current law. The legislation would ensure that Colorado Main Street retailers are not penalized for creating jobs in Colorado.

Udall Presses Energy Secretary Nominee on Support for NREL and Climate Change Initiatives

Mark Udall, who serves on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, pressed Dr. Ernest Moniz, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and President Obama's nominee for Secretary of Energy, on his vision for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, which has developed innovations in renewable energy technologies and generated over 5,500 jobs in Colorado. Udall also addressed climate change as a priority for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Udall addressed climate change as a priority for the Department of Energy: 'Climate change is happening in Colorado - we've had unprecedented droughts, we've had low snow years, we have forest ecosystems that are being savaged by the bark beetle, we had enormous fires last year - I think it's time to act. There's great opportunity presenting itself to us in the context of national security, job creation and, of course, environmental benefits,' Udall said during the hearing. 'Colorado's balanced mix of traditional and renewable sources of energy is a model for our country to move toward lowering carbon emissions and reducing the effects of climate change,' he added later.

Udall also questioned Moniz on the potential of small modular reactors in generating safe nuclear power. Udall believes that safe nuclear energy is part of a silver buckshot strategy in our country's pursuit of developing sustainable, renewable and domestic sources of energy. Udall has been a supporter of developing the promising future of safe nuclear energy and introduced legislation in past sessions of Congress.

Moniz agreed that small modular reactors are 'a very promising direction that we need to pursue, where the most innovation is going on in nuclear energy.'
